About Elsa’s Pocket Full of Dreams, a novel

A writer’s journey

Coming up with the story

When I set out to write this novel it was, at first, as a reaction to what was available to read in the romance section. I yearned to read a true love story, full of surprises, that would be substantial and wouldn’t be forgotten as soon as I read the last word.

That’s when Elsa showed up, fully formed, as she had been waiting for me to write her story forever. She had so much to say, my hand couldn’t keep up with the frantic pace; her story came as a gushing geyser of words that I would transcribe on a spiral book (many spiral books) for ten days straight.

When it suddenly stopped, I was faced with that too familiar hurdle: What next? I had written many beginnings for many novels before, since I was a child, and finished only a few, never very well. This time, this Elsa, who had come out of nowhere, wanted her story told, and told well, and I had never persevered long enough to get past the first wave of inspiration before.

What is a budding writer to do when fate comes-a-knocking?

I wish I could say it was a straight path to the end, but it wasn’t. As in all epic novels, I had my stumbling blocks, my mentors, my losses, the big moment where I was ready to give it all up (many of those), and the final call to persevere till the novel was perfectly what it was meant to be. process I went through as a writer, which is quite an adventure in itself, and are intended for
those who are curious to know more about the behind the scenes.

About the author

Catherine Desgranges

Who am I? I could tell you that I have accumulated a slew of diplomas in literature, languages, philosophy,
music writing techniques, piano, harpsichord, singing, and polarity therapy, but it only tells you what I have
studied and loved. Not who I am.

In the end we are the sum of our experiences, and all those diplomas don’t mean a lot compare to the true
achievement of my life, which was to follow my heart and climb all the mountains that lead me toward love.
The kind of achievement that is usually relegated to fiction.

Elsa’s Pocket Full of Dreams is not my story. But I know first-hand what it’s like to live far away from the one
you love and what it takes to follow through and not let go. My own personal journey helped me understand
and infuse the novel with realism and authenticity.
